Salaam,
I have a questions about jinns. Why is it that some people can see them, and others can't? Similarly, if you can see them, what does this mean?

The term ‘Jinn’ comes from the word ‘Janna’ which means hidden or obscured from the vision. Thus, the word Majnoon (insane) also strings on from that word as the mind of a person who is insane is also obscured i.e. from sanity. Thus, though there is no doubt in their existence, their appearance is obscured from our eyes.
This is further highlighted in Surah A’araf where Allah Ta’ala says, “Indeed, he (shaytan) sees you; he and his company (jinnat) from where you do not see them.”

Thus it is not possible to see the Jinnah in their true from; the Qur’an highlights that they have been made from smokeless flames.

Furthermore, Bayhaqi relates from Imam Shafi’ee, “Whomsoever makes the claim that he has seen a Jinn, we will invalidate his witnessing (i.e. in a court of Shari’ah as the person is rendered a liar) except when that person is a prophet.” (Fathul Bari 6/385)

Hafiz ibn Hajar rahimahullah commentates on this statement by highlighting that this is in relation to that person who claims to have seen a Jinn in their actual form.

However, despite this fact; it is possible to see a Jinn in the form of something else:

‘There is no doubt that the can change their form to the form of a person or an animal. They can change their appearance to snakes, scorpions, camels, cows, sheep, horses, donkeys, birds and even the children of Adam. For example, Shaytan came to the Quraysh in the form of Suraqah ibn Malik ibn Ju’sham when the Quraysh had intended to leave for Badr.” (Aakamil Marjaan fi Gara’ibil Akhbar wa Ahkamil Jaan page 18)

If you can feel their presence then seek refuge in Allah Ta’ala and recite the guidance which has come to us through our Nabi salallahu alayhi wasallam. Try to remain in the state of purity and remember Allah Ta’ala well.
