Renew your Iman

By applying ‘Itr, the body of a person will begin to smell fragrant but after a while, he will realise that the fragrance will die down and may be mixed in with ‘smelly’ substances such as sweat and body odour. Naturally, if he wants to smell nice again then he must reapply his perfume.

In the same way, we will find our Iman the subject of fluctuation. We will leave the house very high in Iman and some days we will come back feeling extremely low, lonely and lost. This is why we have to constantly renew and reapply the Iman in our hearts so that the ‘smelly’ sins won’t take over our life. Thus the Prophet salallahu alayhi wa salam said,

“Keep on renewing your Iman.”

The Sahaabah radiallahu anhum enquired,

“O Messenger of Allah (salallahu alayhi wa salam)! How should we renew our Iman?”

The Messenger of Allah salallahu alayhi wa salam then stated,

“Recite لا إله إلا الله (there is no god but Allah) very often.”

The Effect of Sins

"Stay away from outward sins and inward sins. " (Quraan)

Sins cause a barrier between a person and His Creator, between a person and the mercy of Allah, between a person and sustenance in abundance, between a person and peace of mind and contentment of the heart, between a person and a peaceful time in the grave, between a person and Jannah (Paradise) etc.

Sins lead a person to the displeasure, anger and wrath of Allah. They lead a person to difficulties and hardships, both here and in the hereafter. It leads a person to depression and anxiety day in and it leads a person to the punishment of the grave and finally the punishment of Allah Ta'ala (May Allah protect us all - A'meen).

Sins are very tempting, desirous and beautiful in the beginning but soon it shows its ugly, poisonous head. Like a snake kept in a beautiful, colourful scented packet very tempting and inviting, but as soon as it is opened and one sees the snake - what a shock, fear, etc sets in.

Hakimul Ummat, Hadhrat Moulana Ashraf Ali Thanvi (Rahimahullah) has mentioned an eye- opening story illustrating the evil of sins. A married man used to wet his bed every night. His wife asked what is this? You are a grown up, married man. We treat little children with this disease. We stop their liquids early, etc. He explained that shaytaan comes to him in his dreams every night and takes him for a long walk, after which he needs to go to the toilet to urinate. Shaytaan shows him an ultra modern, hygienic toilet wherein he relieves himself. But it is all in his dream and he wets the bed. His wife said, "Shaytaan is such a great friend of yours that he visits you every night and he is the king of the evil Jinnaat. He knows where all the treasures, etc. are kept. Why don't you ask him to show you all this treasure. You know we are so poor. You can bring us this treasure." He said "Yes, I never thought of this idea."
That night shayaan came in his dream again. He told shaytaan what his wife said. Shaytaan said why did you not tell me long ago? Come I will take you right now. He took him and showed him a huge treasure box filled with jewels, diamonds, golds, pearls etc. He rushed to pick it up (all in his dream, in his sleep, in bed). It was so heavy he passed stools and messed the bed (a reality). In the morning his wife asked, "And now what is this?" He explained his dream. She said you rather carry on doing what you were doing before.

Many people remember this story but forget the moral. Moulana Ashraf Ali Thanvi (Rahimahullah) explained that sins are those temptations, the glittering gold and silver etc. in the dreamworld, while the reality is worse than the actual stool in bed.
May Allah protect us from all sins. Ameen.

Another example of the evil of sins is that of a person who has for example imported some goods which he is going to market at 100% profit or even more. It is such an item that as soon as it comes into the market, it will all be sold. But he finds out that his goods are blocked in the customs because some of his paper work is not done. Similarly, our good deeds will give us so much benefit but our sins are blocking those benefits.

It comes clearly in the Hadith that for some servants of Allah, a huge amount of sustenance is waiting for them right at their heads but only their sins are blocking it. Just remove the sins, make taubah and the sustenance will start flowing.

Sins are like a person day-dreaming. By committing sins of lust, it is like fantasising. By earning haraam for example, is like dreaming of building castles in the air. Like Sheikh Chillie who was asked by somebody to carry his ghee worth 100 Rupees to his house for which he will pay him 10 Rupees. He carried the ghee on his head and began day-dreaming that with the 10 Rupees, I will buy 10 eggs and let them hatch under my neighbour's hen. I will have 10 hens which will lay 10 eggs. Soon I will have plenty of fowls. Then I will buy goats, sheep, cows, horses etc. Then I will buy land, cultivate it, and have lots of crops etc. Then I will build a house. I will get married. I will have children. They will have children. My grandchildren will come and trouble me and say "Dada Jaan", "Daadi" is calling for meals and I will say, "Out of here," shaking his head and saying, "Don't disturb me" and then the ghee falls from his head. The owner becomes angry and says, "You destroyed my 100 Rupees worth of ghee". He replies, "you are worried of your 100 Rupees. My 3 generations are destroyed!"

Similarly, sins are just an imagination of enjoyment while their evils are a reality.

In the Ayat mentioned at the beginning, Allah Ta'ala has first mentioned outward sins. This shows how serious and dangerous they are! Shaytaan deceives many of us by saying the inside, must be right. The outside does not matter. Many say, "My Islam is in my heart, I don't have to keep a beard and make a show of my Islam." A woman will say, "My modesty and purdah is in my heart. My heart is clean. I don't have to make a show of my Islam by wearing a burqah," etc. and similar other remarks.

A few examples of a few outward sins are mentioned now: A person who does not keep a sunnat beard ( i.e. a fist length on all sides etc.) should consider this example: a plane fall of hajees lands at Johannesburg International airport by Saudi Airlines. The captain, pilots etc. all are Muslims who have just performed haj. The captain announces that we have all made haj and have tawakkul in Allah and we do not have to make a show of our Islam. So similarly, our aircraft has got wheels but when landing, we are not going to take them out. We will keep them in our heart. We don't have to make a show of our wheels." At that time, all will realise that our philosophy of 'hiding' our Islain (beard) is not correct but must be shown outside.

Similarly a royal bird that soars high in the air and wins great prizes, if somebody thinks the inside "steam-power" of the bird is the important thing and the outside does not matter, cuts the wings of the bird - the bird will not fly. It will lose all its value and die in depression. Similar is the case of a sincere conscious Muslim.

The importance of the outside can further be gauged by the example of a hobo dressed in torn and tattered clothes, no shoes, etc. who forces himself into the first class lounge at a modern international airport, the people are upset and force him out but to no avail. They report him to the person in charge. Following procedure, he asks him for his ticket. On seeing that he has a first class ticket, all have to accept him there. When boarding the plane, he will be turned out, but he forces himself into the first class. Again he is turned away, but when they see his ticket, he is given VIP treatment again. Similarly, his whole joumey will initially go in difficulty and opposition at every stage and will become a luxury and comfort when he proves his inside.

Similarly will the journey into the Hereafter be if the outside is not adorned and identified by good actions and sunnats - by the barkat of imaan, he will eventually be given VIP treatment.

Now let us consider a few examples of purdah (hijab) of women. To protect milk and meat from the cat and money from the crooks, so much precaution is taken. When in fact money, meat and milk cannot walk or talk. So how much more should the women be protected from the enemy.

Valuable treasures, gold, silver etc. are kept in a safe. Nobody objects to it. It is the right thing to do but when women are kept safely in the house or behind the veil, then it is objectionable. Is the value of our women less than milk, meat or money?! The problem is that we have forgotten our true values - values of lslam, by the various propaganda machines of the west from nursery till university, we have become warm and welcoming to moral values that come from musicians to street criminals.

It is necessary for a woman to cover herself with a proper purdah that fulfills its purpose. We shouldn't have the thinking that we need to understand Allah's commandments before carrying them out. Instead we should cover ourselves to see that the command of Allah is fulfilled and complete submission is observed to the Creator.

Judge Akbar Ilaahabadi said women were asked what has happened to your purdah (veil). Why don't you wear it any more. They said it has fallen on the brains of our men! (so they don't allow us to wear it).

May Allah save us from the snares of shaytan and bless us with proper understanding and good deeds. Ameen.

What can we do for Gaza?

The first question is that, "Is this war a sign of the Day of Judgement?" The answer is quite simply, yes.

One of the signs of the Day of Resurrection is that we the muslims will be large in number, but we will be weak and broken.

Thauban reported that the Messenger of Allah said:

“It is near that the nations will call one another against you just as the eaters call one another to their dishes.”

Somebody asked: “Is this because we will be few in numbers that day?”

He said: “Nay, but that day you shall be numerous, but you will be like the foam of the sea, and Allah will take the fear of you away from your enemies and will place weakness into your hearts.”

Somebody asked: “What is this weakness?”

He said: “The love of the world and the dislike of death.” (Abu Dawud)

The Muslims are now seen as the lowest from among societies. Muslim nations have severed themselves from each other in a bid to gain authority. The Muslim brotherhood about which the Prophet salallahu alayhi wa salam once said,

“The Muslim Ummah is like the human body, if one part of the body aches, the entire body aches.”

Is now more like if one part of the Ummah is in pain and suffering, the rest of the Muslim nations will sit back and watch the clouds go by.

The question one must ask is why is this happening? How can it be possible that 4 million Jews across the world are more stronger and fiercer than a group of people who are 2.6 billion in number? The reason is because the teachings of Islam have been left and the way of Rasulullah salallahualayhi wa salam has been thrown away. If a country was to follow the way Allah has decreed that a country should be run. If it stepped in when its brethren are suffering and it tried to bring peace to the towns and cities. Then you would see that the people of that country would be honourable and respected in the eyes of muslims and non-muslims. But in this day and age there is none like this.

The underlying theme now is, what can we do to help?

Well firstly and most importantly we must make Dua. It is the main thing we can do to help. The Prophet salallahu alayhi wa salam has said that:

"Dua is the weapon of a believer."

Dua is extremely important, if a person starts to neglect dua then Allah doesn’t like it because that Muslim isn’t asking from Allah. Dua is such that we should even ask Allah for help when we want to tie our own shoelace! Allah is Al-Kareem He is the Rich the Wealthy, the Possessor of all bounties, He is the Most Powerful, He is the Most Wise, He is the All Knowing and He is Control over all things. Time and time again we see the various attributes of Allah mentioned in the Qur’an. In Imam Nawawi’s Arba’in it has been narrated on the authority of Abu Dharr radiallahu anhu:

“O My servants, were the first of you and the last of you, the human of you and the jinn of you to rise up in one place and make a request of Me, and were I to give everyone what he requested, that would not decrease what I have, any more than a needle decreases the sea if put into it.”

When a Muslim makes dua for his Muslim brother an angel says ‘Ameen’ and makes the same dua for the one who made the supplication in the first place. Now I ask, will an angel ever have his dua rejected when all they do is glorify Allah night and day? Whenever the Prophet salallahu alayhi wa salam and his companions ever had a battle or war or any sort of difficulty the first thing they would do is observe patience and make dua. They would make such dua that when armies 10,000 in number would come to fight a group of Muslim only 346 in number, you would find that the 346 beat the 10,000. It seems impossible and unbelievable but this is the effect and power that dua had.

The second most helpful thing a person can do at this moment in time is also to donate whatever you can to the oppressed people. Sadaqah (charity) is something that removes sins and has only goodness attached to it. There are many ahadeeth regarding charity and here is one. The Prophet salallahu alayhi wa salams said:

“The believer's shade on the Day of Resurrection will be his Sadaqah.” (Ahmad).

Recently alot of people have been hesitant about donating money to Gaza for the reason that they aren't sure wether their money will reach the people or not. The scholars have said that if a person donates money in the path of Allah he should not worry about wether it reaches there or not because at the end of the day his deed of donating the money is accepted wether it reaches the place or not. Aslong as our intentions are clean and we try to make the means of finding a proper person to deal with the charity and not someone who is untrustworthy, then we should leave the rest to Allah. Also, one should note that when we do donate money to charity and sadaqa we should keep our intentions that we are doing such acts for the pleasure of Allah and that we should not think that by donating this money we are helping the people in a boastful or proud way that they are relying on our help and support. No, this is not the case. If anything we are helping ourselves because we are the poor and needy in this world and in the hereafter in terms of good deeds. This sadaqa will help us in the hereafter when we are standing in the courts of Allah.

Recently there has been alot of media coverage and advertisements concerning demonstrations and rallies. Concerning this issue one must keep in mind the following; If one goes to a protest, we know that this does put pressure on the government and it does have some sort of effect but during the these times, you will notice that 50,000 people will go to Hyde park to march down to the embassy, but the majority of those people that are Muslims may miss their Zuhar, Asar and Magrib prayers because they are so close to each other and there isn’t no proper place to pray or to even do wudhu. Fardh acts come before everything else. If the people cannot get their prayer then what type of effect will these protests have? Imagine if every protestor before he/she left their house they prayed 2 rakaat nafl salaah and made dua for those in Gaza. That in itself would have more of an effect and virtue than these protests.

Insh'Allah more will be written about this in the coming days.

May Allah bring peace to our Muslim lands and May He bring back unity and respect to this ummah. Ameen.

P.S. Insha'Allah in the next couple of days we will be raising money for the Gaza Appeal in college. So brothers and sisters are requested to try and donate as much as possible. Jazakallah.

A New Year

As a new year has begun both Islamically and in the Western world. Many people will look at the year ahead of them with many ambitions and resolutions planned. However, we must not forget the past years of our lives as they are instrumental in explaining who we are today. We must not look at the past and think that it is done and dusted but we should take lessons from the mistakes we have made and make sure that we do not return to them. Many people are stuck in the thought that we will make this year one which is fruitful but fail to assess why their previous years on this planet have been a shambles. As Allah Ta'ala says in the Qur'an, "So, relate the chronicles, so that they may ponder." Similarly, after narrating the entire story of Yusuf (peace be upon him) Allah Ta'ala says "Surely, in the narratives of these, there is a lesson for the people of understanding." From this we understand that it is not just crucial to plan change for the coming years but to understand where we went wrong in previous years. Inshallah, through this, we will be able to rectify ourselves.

When a student reads the Qur'an to a Qari, the Qari will highlight his student's mistakes with a pen and send him back so that he can rectify his recital before he proceeds to his next sabak (lesson). In the same way, we should highlight our mistakes to ourselves and then rectify them so that we can proceed into the new year confident of not making the same old errors as before.

May Allah Ta'ala give us the ability to rectify ourselves and stay away from mistakes we have promised not to return to. Ameen.
